Motherboard Repair/Logic Board Repair
When it comes to phones, the motherboard, or logic board, behaves as the “brain” of the phone. The screen, battery, charge port, etc. plug into it, and the logic board relays that information to other parts of the phone.
The central processor, storage space, and many other functions are a direct part of the motherboard. Motherboard repair can solve issues like this, but things can get a little more complicated than a simple screen or battery.
The Difference Between Standard Repairs and Logic Board Repairs
Things such as screens and batteries simply plug into the motherboard like a power cable plugs into an outlet. Other things are attached to the motherboard with solder, which is basically a solid metal connection. In order to repair or replace these parts, the metal must be melted down very carefully and replaced at a very small scale. This process is known as micro-soldering.
After enough practice, repairs such as screen replacements become second nature to a skilled technician. However, making logic board repairs requires much more thoughtful analysis and problem solving, and a very keen eye. In fact, these type of repairs almost always require the use of a microscope. Because of this extra attention and analysis, micro-soldering repairs usually have a much longer time commitment as well.
Phone Issues That Require Micro-Soldering
Perhaps you’ve heard of the menacing “touch disease”, a problem that occurs in about one out of every three iPhone 6 pluses and the occasional iPhone 6. Touch on your screen would completely die, and occasionally you’d be able to see grey bars flicker at the top of the screen. Sometimes “bending” your phone a bit (NOT recommended) would fix it for a while. This is a problem with the Touch IC (integrated circuit) on the phones motherboard, which requires micro-soldering to fix.
Some other common problems that require micro-soldering are backlight issues, where part of the screen appears much darker than the rest, or the whole thing is extremely dark, almost like an old-school Gameboy. The Power IC, which controls the power flow from the charge port, through the battery, and into the phone could also cause phones to never boot properly. On certain models of phones and tablets the charge port itself is soldered to the motherboard, in which case any repairs related to that port will require micro-soldering.
What it boils down to is this: if something we can plug into your phone isn’t fixing the issue, micro-soldering almost certainly will.
