MacBook Data Recovery

Lost files on a MacBook, or a machine that will not start? We handle Apple MacBook data recovery from MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models at board level, including machines that will not power on at all. Free assessment at our Burwood and Newtown workshops.

Professional MacBook Data Recovery

Most people who need MacBook file recovery or MacBook SSD data recovery are not dealing with a failed drive. They are dealing with a laptop that will not switch on, and the data inside is perfectly intact. Separating those two situations is the first thing we do, because it changes the job entirely.

Where the board can be revived, we revive it and read the storage directly. Where it cannot, we work at component level under a microscope to get the storage readable long enough to pull the data off. Apple silicon MacBooks make this harder — the SSD is soldered to the logic board and encrypted to that specific machine — but harder is not the same as impossible, and board-level repair is exactly what we do every day.

For phones, tablets and non-Apple laptops, see our general data recovery service. For MacBooks specifically, this is the page.

MacBook Models We Recover Data From

Every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from 2015 onwards, Intel and Apple silicon.

  • MacBook Air (M1 · M2 · M3 · M4)2018–2025
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (Intel · M1 · M2)2019–2022
  • MacBook Pro 14-inch (M1 · M2 · M3 · M4 · M5)2021–2025
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch (M1 · M2 · M3 · M4 · M5)2019–2025
  • Intel MacBook Pro (with and without T2)2015–2020
  • Older Intel MacBook Air (removable SSD)2015–2017

Older Intel MacBooks with removable storage are usually the most straightforward. T2 and Apple silicon models require board work because the storage cannot simply be lifted out and read elsewhere.

We recover data from every recent MacBook, Intel and Apple silicon. Your Apple model number is printed on the underside of the case and starts with “A” — quote it when you call and we can confirm exactly which machine you have before you travel in.

Signs You Need MacBook Data Recovery

  • MacBook will not power on, or powers on to a blank screen
  • A folder with a question mark, or a prohibitory sign at startup
  • Stuck on the Apple logo or the progress bar never completes
  • Files or folders that have disappeared
  • An external drive that mounts but shows nothing
  • Startup disk reported as full, corrupt or unreadable
  • The machine was dropped, or liquid was spilt on it
  • Disk Utility reporting errors it cannot repair

If any of these apply, the single most useful thing you can do is stop using the machine. Continued use is what turns recoverable data into overwritten data.

  • Free assessment before you commit to anything.
  • Realistic answers. We tell you early if we think the data is gone.
  • Your privacy respected. We verify the recovery; we do not read your files.

MacBook Data Recovery Process

  1. Assessment. We establish whether the fault is the machine or the storage. Free.
  2. Quote. You get a price and an honest view of the odds before we start.
  3. Recovery. Board repair where needed, then the data is read and copied.
  4. Verification. You confirm the recovered files are the ones you needed.
  5. Handover. Data supplied on your drive or ours, and advice on backing up so it does not happen twice.

MacBook Data Recovery Cost

Price follows difficulty, not urgency. A MacBook with a dead charging port and a perfectly healthy SSD is a modest job. A corroded board after a spill, or a drive with physical failure, takes far more work and costs accordingly.

The assessment is free and the quote comes before any work. If the recovery is not viable we will say so at that point, not after a bill has accumulated. Where the data matters more than the laptop, we will focus on the data and tell you plainly that the machine is not worth saving.

Why Apple Silicon Changed Data Recovery

On an older MacBook, recovering data was often simple: remove the drive, connect it to another machine, copy the files. Apple silicon ended that. From the M1 onward, storage is soldered directly to the logic board and encrypted against the Secure Enclave in that specific chip. The drive cannot be lifted out and read elsewhere, because outside that machine it is meaningless.

The practical consequence is that data recovery on a modern MacBook is board repair. To read the storage, the board has to work well enough to boot, which means diagnosing and fixing whatever stopped it. That is a specialist job, and it is why many shops will tell you the data is gone when what they mean is that they cannot do board-level work.

It also means your password matters. FileVault encryption is tied to your credentials, and without them the recovered data stays unreadable even to us. Bring the password or your Apple Account details when you bring the machine.

How To Avoid Needing Us Again

Most of the data loss we see would have been a non-event with a backup. Time Machine to an external drive costs the price of the drive and runs without you thinking about it. iCloud covers documents and photos but is not a full system backup, so it is worth having both.

The rule worth remembering is that data existing in only one place is data you are choosing to risk. If the files matter — a business, a thesis, years of family photos — put them somewhere else as well as on the laptop. We would rather tell you that now than meet you after the machine has failed.

Data loss and hardware failure usually arrive together. You may also want our data recovery service, or our liquid damage repair page if a spill was involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recover data from a MacBook that will not turn on?

Very often, yes. A machine that will not boot is usually a power, board or display fault rather than a dead drive. We work at board level, so we can frequently bring a board back far enough to read the storage even when the MacBook itself is beyond economic repair.

My MacBook has an Apple silicon chip. Is recovery still possible?

It is harder but frequently possible. On M1 and later, storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted, so recovery means repairing the board rather than moving a drive to another machine. This is board-level work, which is what we do.

I deleted files by accident. Can you recover deleted files from a MacBook?

Often, if you act quickly. Stop using the MacBook immediately — every minute of normal use risks overwriting what you deleted. Bring it in rather than running recovery software yourself, which writes to the same drive you are trying to recover from.

How much does MacBook data recovery cost?

It depends on why the data is inaccessible. A drive that is healthy but locked behind a broken machine is a straightforward job. A corroded or failed board is not. We assess first and quote before starting.

How long does data recovery take?

Simple cases can be same day. Board-level cases take longer because the repair has to come first. We give you a realistic timeframe after the assessment rather than a hopeful one at the counter.

Will you look at my personal files?

No. We access the storage only as far as is needed to verify the recovery worked, and we do not browse your files. If you would rather be present when the drive is checked, ask and we will arrange it.

My MacBook was liquid damaged. Is the data gone?

Not necessarily, but time matters enormously. Corrosion spreads across the board every day the machine sits. See our liquid damage repair page, and bring it in sooner rather than later.

Can you recover from an external drive or Time Machine backup?

Yes. MacBook hard drive recovery covers external drives, SSDs and USB media alongside internal storage. Bring the drive and the MacBook if both are involved.

Do I need to bring my password?

For most recoveries, yes — FileVault encryption means the data cannot be read without your credentials. Bring the password or Apple Account details, or recovery may not be possible at all.

What if the data cannot be recovered?

We tell you plainly, and we tell you early rather than after a long bill. Some failures are genuinely unrecoverable, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
