Is a cracked MacBook screen worth repairing?
Nearly always, yes. A replacement machine starts well above a thousand dollars for an Air and above two thousand for a Pro. A screen replacement is a fraction of that, and the rest of the laptop after a crack is usually untouched — the storage, the board and the battery carry on as before.
The calculation only really shifts on much older Intel models, where an assembly can approach what the whole laptop is worth secondhand. If that is your situation we will say so rather than take the job.
Why MacBook screens are not like other laptop screens
On most laptops the screen is a panel you can unclip and swap. On any recent MacBook the glass, panel and backlight are bonded into a single sealed assembly. That is why a MacBook screen replacement means fitting a complete display unit rather than just the broken layer.
It also means the camera, microphone, ambient light sensor and lid-close behaviour all run through that assembly. A careless fit leaves one of them broken, which is the difference between a screen that works and a MacBook that works.
What actually changes the price
- Your model. A 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR assembly costs considerably more than a 13-inch Air panel.
- What is actually broken. A black screen is not always a broken screen — it can be the display cable or the logic board.
- Parts grade. There is a real difference in colour accuracy and brightness between grades, and you should be told which you are getting.

Retina display vs standard display
Most modern MacBooks use high-resolution Retina displays with laminated construction. They give excellent image quality but are more complex to repair than older non-Retina models, and that complexity affects the replacement cost. The Liquid Retina XDR displays in larger Pro models use mini-LED backlighting and sit at the top of the range.
Intel vs Apple Silicon models
Repair requirements differ between Intel-based MacBooks and the newer Apple Silicon machines — the M1, M2, M3, M4 and now M5 generations. Sometimes only the display panel is damaged. More often, on any recent model, the complete display assembly is replaced — the LCD, glass, camera, hinges and housing together, because they are bonded into one sealed unit. Times assume the part is in stock and the fault is the display itself. Where the diagnosis turns up a damaged cable, a backlight circuit fault or a bent lid from a previous repair attempt, we will tell you before starting rather than after.
What to do in the first hour
Two things make a difference before you bring it in. Back up if the machine still shows an image, even partially. And stop opening and closing the lid, since flexing a cracked panel pushes glass toward the hinge and can turn a straightforward job into an expensive one.

Will you lose your data?

It might not be the screen at all

What a proper MacBook screen repair should include
Not every quote covers the same work, which is why two prices for the “same” repair can differ so much. Before you commit anywhere, it is worth knowing what should be in the job.

- Clarity on the part. You should be told whether the assembly is genuine or a high-grade equivalent, and what that means for brightness and colour.
- The full assembly fitted correctly. Camera, microphone, ambient light sensor and lid-close behaviour all run through the display. All of them should work afterwards.
- Testing before handover. True Tone, auto-brightness, the camera and the hinge, not just “it lights up”.
- A written warranty. Ours is six months on parts and workmanship.
If a quote sounds unusually cheap, one of the above is usually missing.
Should you replace a MacBook screen yourself?
We understand the temptation — assemblies are available online and the videos make it look quick. In practice this is the repair we most often see go wrong, and the second attempt costs more than the first would have.
The reasons are consistent. The display is bonded and sealed, so it comes apart with heat and even pressure rather than force. The hinge assembly is under tension and will bend the lid if it is released carelessly. The display cable is short, fragile, and easy to tear when the lid is opened mid-repair. And on newer models the panel is paired to the machine, so an assembly that has not been fitted properly can leave True Tone or auto-brightness broken even when the image looks fine.
If you have already tried and hit trouble, bring it in as it is. We would much rather see the parts in a bag than have someone force it back together.
